About Bijaypur Silk Cluster

The cluster is known as recognized hand-made mulberry silk production hub popularly known for Garod silk production in India and obtained Khadi mark. It provides livelihood to more than 600 local weaver-artisans. In 2019, Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India and Khadi & Village Industries Commission supported Bijaypur Silk Khadi Seva Sanstha, SPV formed with weavers to shape “BIJOYPUR SILK CLUSTER” as vibrant one under the scheme SFURTI. EDII, Ahmedabad provided technical support. The artisans have a well-equipped Common Facility Center with Design Lab, Reeling & Twisting section, Jacquard Loom for all type of silk saree production, fashion garments making and finishing section and modern show room. It is a model cluster in eastern India, runs on solar source of energy and lean manufacturing practices are followed.

History
Murshidabad had a long association with the silk industry during the time of the English East India company, which saw the emergence of two English factories to spruce up the production of silk as there was a growing demand in England owing to the cheaper prices and superior quality, particularly during a time when the Italians started charging additional cess. The Murshidabad district of West Bengal is well-known for producing silk of excellent quality.
Location
The cluster is located at Bijoypur, Mirzapur, Amgachi and Dholo villages in Raghunathganj-I block in Murshidabad district in West Bengal, India. The distance from Baharampur, district head quarter is 54 Kms and 245 Kms away from Kolkata. Gankar is nearest railway station. The cluster is well- connected by road and rail with Howrah, Kolkata and North Bengal. The nearest Airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at a distance of 255 Kms.
